Cognitive Ability, Intelligence Tests

Cognitive ability tests measure problem solving ability using numbers, words and symbols. All good tests of cognitive ability should be underpinned by widely recognised theory. RightPeople tests several different ability constructs, based on a theory of intelligence now called CHC Theory (Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of intelligence; McGrew, 2008). CHC Theory combines two similar psychological theories of intelligence: Carrol’s “three-stratum-theory” and Cattell and Horn’s “Theory of Fluid and Crystallized Intelligence” (Gf/Gc theory). This is the most widely supported approach to assessing a person’s intelligence.

Important facts about problem solving tests

Tests that measure learning potential, working memory, speed of problem solving and general problem solving ability include:

  • Attention Switching TestAttention Switching Test

Measures working memory and fluid intelligence (Gf). Examines the ability to change or switch between different tasks.

  • Deductive Abstract Reasoning Test

A test of fluid intelligence (Gf) designed to examine strategic thinking and logical reasoning. This test helps examine a person's ability to solve more complex problems.

  • Shadowing Task

This test is a measure of attention switching and examines a person's ability to apply instructions given to them verbally through headphones. This test is designed for call and contact centre environments and is administered using a standard computer with headphones.

  • Multi-Tasks

A test of higher-level problem solving ability. This test is often referred to as a dual task, as it involves solving two problems simultaneously. Competing tasks are good predictors of management ability.

  • Working Memory Test

A test of fluid intelligence (Gf) designed to examine working memory skills. This test is presented in a dynamic (moving format).

  • Clerical - Symbolic Comparison Test

A measure of mental processing speed (Gs). Examines clerical and perceptual speed and checking ability.

  • Number Chains Test

A measure of fluid intelligence (Gf) that examines problem solving ability and numerical fluency at an elementary level.

  • Number Patterns Test

A measure of fluid intelligence (Gf) that examines general reasoning skills and numerical fluency.

  • Spatial Reasoning Test

A measure of fluid intelligence (Gf) that examines sequential and spatial type reasoning skills.

  • Equations Test

A measure of mathematical equation problem-solving.

  • Mechanical Reasoning Test

A measure of reasoning with mechanical concepts.

  • Electrical Reasoning Test

A measure of reasoning with electrical concepts.

Tests that measure language / verbal ability include:

  • Word Reasoning Test

A measure of crystallized intelligence (Gc) that examines knowledge of word meanings and language comprehension.

  • Reading Comprehension Test

A measure of crystallized intelligence (Gc) that examines verbal critical reasoning skills.
