The blocking of one physiological or psychological process by another, e.g. the response to one sense receptor inhibiting response to another, or fear inhibiting escape from danger. In PSYCHOANALYSIS, inhibition is used to describe an impulse from the ID being blocked from entering CONSCIOUSNESS by the SUPEREGO. This is not the same as REPRESSION where the impulse is actively held back.
