Figure-and-ground

Apparently, one of the psychological prerequisites for PERCEPTION to take place is that the perceptual FIELD is organised as figures distinguished against a relatively homogeneous background. The figure is usually the part of the field that is attended to, though the relationship between figure and ground can switch. The whole PHENOMENON is best illustrated in an unusual perceptual field like an ambiguous figure.
