A CV can show where someone has worked. An interview can show how they present. Neither consistently shows how quickly a candidate can absorb unfamiliar information, recognise patterns or solve a new problem under pressure. What is a general cognitive ability test?
A general cognitive ability test, often called a GCA test, measures a person’s capacity to reason, learn, process information and solve problems. It is not a test of what a candidate already knows about a particular job, industry or organisation. Instead, it assesses the underlying thinking skills that support performance when work is complex, changing or unfamiliar.
Most tests present time-bound questions involving verbal, numerical and abstract information. This is where job analysis matters. The assessment should follow the job requirements, not the other way around.
A cognitive test should not stand alone

A useful report should make the result understandable for hiring managers. Rather than presenting a score in isolation, it should explain the candidate’s likely strengths, possible development considerations and relevance to the role’s cognitive demands.
Recruiters can then use results to ask better interview questions. If a candidate’s abstract reasoning result is strong, the interview might explore examples of learning a new process quickly or diagnosing an unfamiliar issue.
